Peri-prosthetic Fractures

A peri-prosthetic fracture is a broken bone that occurs around the components or implanted hardware of a hip or knee replacement. It creates a unique challenge that requires special attention. These fractures are rare and usually occur after a patient has spent years functioning well with the joint.

Treatment of these fractures requires experience and skill in both complex joint replacement surgery and trauma surgery. Special techniques accompanied by specialised equipment and implants are also often required.

With an aging population, the number of primary hip and knee replacements procedures being performed is increasing each year, which means that the rate of patients presenting challenging peri-prosthetic fractures is also increasing.
